Professor Dr Hamed Sanei
Professor Dr Hamed Sanei is a globally recognized expert in organic petrology and geochemistry, currently serving as Director of the Lithospheric Organic Carbon Laboratory (LOC) in the Department of Geoscience at Aarhus University, Denmark. He earned his PhD from the University of Victoria, Canada, and has held several distinguished positions, including Senior Research Scientist at the Geological Survey of Canada, President of The Society for Organic Petrology (TSOP), and President of the Canadian Society of Organic Petrology (CSCOP). He has published numerous peer-reviewed papers and book chapters in the fields of energy and environment, contributing extensively to the global understanding of carbon.
Professor Sanei’s research integrates geology, geochemistry, and climate science, with a particular focus on stable forms of organic carbon in the lithosphere and engineered materials. He is internationally renowned for pioneering the concept of biochar permanence, introducing the inertinite benchmark as a standard for assessing long-term carbon stability, an innovation that has significantly shaped the scientific foundation of carbon dioxide removal and carbon crediting frameworks. His work continues to shape the scientific understanding of carbon storage permanence, supporting international climate goals and policy development. Through sustained research leadership and global collaboration, he remains at the forefront of efforts to enhance the integrity and transparency of carbon removal strategies.
